May 2019 Highlights
ICE: The leading venue for MSCI index futures

In a month where risk-off sentiment prevailed with trade tensions once more dominating the headlines, market participants turned to ICE's MSCI futures to manage their exposure:  
  • May '19 has seen record volumes for a non roll month for MSCI EM futures, with ADV for the month reaching over 175,000 lots (over $8.5 billion in notional) and 135,000 lots ADV YTD (up 23%) with month end open interest of 1.25 million contracts ($63 billion in notional).
  • ICE's MSCI Sectors Futures*: Institutional investors have increased their usage of Sector futures to navigate the current business cycle. Notably, the recently listed MSCI EMU Sector futures have already seen close to 20,000 lots traded this month. Across all Sectors contracts, month end open interest stood at $2.4 billion in notional with YTD volumes of 300,000 lots (up 36%). ​

With Brexit still a big focus, ICE's FTSE franchise continues to be used as a hedging tool for UK related exposure.

  • FTSE 250 Index Futures ADV up 39% versus May 2018
  • FTSE 250 Index Options Open Interest up 29% versus May 2018
  • FTSE Trade at Index Close (TIC) has traded over 10.5k lots​ since launch in January 2019. TIC is used as a hedging tool by those that wish to replicate the FTSE 100 Index close using futures and offers customers a more granular tick size of 0.1 versus the FTSE 100 Futures
  • FTSE 100 Dividend Futures OI up 32% versus May 2018​
  • FTSE Futures OI up 14% YoY across the complex
