February 2020 Highlights
ICE: The leading venue for MSCI Index Futures

The February was a turbulent month for global markets, with fears about COVID-19 becoming a global pandemic. While equity markets had their worst week since 2008, the ICE MSCI Index Futures franchise proved resilient to this increased market volatility – maintaining consistent and tight bid/offer spreads and posting record volumes across our MSCI Index Futures complex.

  • February 28 saw 541k MSCI Emerging Markets Index Futures contracts trade, a non-roll day record
  • February 28 also saw 156k MSCI EAFE Index Futures trade, another non-roll day record
  • ICE February 2020 ADV across all ICE MSCI Index Futures up 76% to 221k YoY
  • Total month end OI across MSCI Index Futures at 2.3m, up 4% YoY
  • MSCI Emerging Markets Index Future (BBG Code MESA) volumes up 80% YoY, OI up 14% YoY
  • MSCI EAFE Index Future (BBG code: MFSA) volumes up 78% YoY, OI up 25% YoY

With the deployment of the improved MSCI Liquidity Provider scheme, ICE now offers the tightest on-screen price picture in key MSCI futures, namely; MSCI EM, EAFE, EM Asia, MSCI World, MSCI China Free, MSCI ACWI and MSCI EM LATAM.

The UK equity derivative franchise saw strong volumes across its products, with robust performance in the FTSE franchise including FTSE 250 Futures and Options and the FTSE 100 & 250 Trade at Index Close (TIC) contracts.

- FTSE 100 Index Futures  OI up 12% YoY, ADV up 36% YoY
- FTSE 250 Index Futures  OI up 15% YoY, ADV up 117% YoY
- FTSE 100 Index Options ADV up 16% YoY
- Over 2.3k FTSE 100 & 250 TIC contracts traded in February
